The ketogenic diet — or keto diet as it is more commonly known — seems to be everywhere these days. The keto diet is a high-fat, low-carb eating plan that has skyrocketed in popularity over the last several years.
According to Prevention, the keto diet plan incorporates fatty foods that are low in carbs such as bacon, eggs, avocados, and more. The diet sends the body into a state of ketosis. This is when molecules known as ketones collect in the bloodstream and cause the body’s blood sugar levels to dip. Basically, the keto diet tricks the body into burning fat for energy, instead of the body’s preferred method of using sugar.
As true of any diet trend, tons of celebrities have jumped onboard and sung its praises. We rounded up some of the most notable faces going keto.
Halle Berry is a strong supporter of the keto diet.
Halle Berry is one of the biggest celebrity supporters of the keto diet. Recently, the award-winning actress detailed to People magazine what she eats in order to maintain the keto lifestyle. For the most part, Berry avoids sugar and loads up on meats like chicken and beef, as well as other healthy foods like vegetables.
"I eat healthy fats all day long, avocado, oil, coconut oil and I use butter, but don’t have any sugar. So when your body gets trained to burn fats, it’s constantly on fat-burning mode—that’s the secret," she told People.
Berry even incorporates the high-fat, low-carb lifestyle into meals for her son and daughter — ages 4 and 10. She said her kids love to eat stuffed zucchini boats.
Kourtney Kardashian raves about the keto diet.
Kourtney Kardashian is a big fan of the keto diet. Kardashian raved about the eating plan on her app. She eats plenty of fresh vegetables and lean proteins and forgoes high-carb foods like pasta, rice, and beans. One meal Kardashian particularly enjoys is broccoli rice or cauliflower rice, she wrote in her app as reported by People magazine.
"Then I would add protein, so I often ate grilled chicken and fish over broccoli rice, cauliflower rice or spaghetti squash. I mixed in roasted vegetables, fresh salads with homemade dressing, and smoothies made with avocados and bananas," she wrote.
Vanessa Hudgens follows the keto diet and eats mostly bacon.
Vanessa Hudgens is a firm believer in the keto diet. The actress and singer appeared on The Rachael Ray Show to debut her Women’s Health magazine cover. To prepare for the photo shoot, Hudgens told Rachael Ray that she lost 10 pounds in 30 days just by eating bacon.
The cured meat is one of the more popular food choices for those participating in the keto diet. In addition to bacon, Hudgens also likes to eat avocados, which are another recommended high-fat, low-carb food to eat on the keto diet.
"When I ate carbs, I would get that dip in the afternoon, where I felt really sluggish," she told Women’s Health magazine. "When I'm off them, my energy stays consistent throughout the day.”
Adriana Lima is a fan of the keto diet.
The Victoria’s Secret Angel and Brazilian model told The Cut that she hardly eats any carbs and works out for at least 120 minutes every day prior to a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. All of that aside, it appears that Lima continues the diet plan to maintain her toned frame.
To make that happen, Lima says she skips the fried foods and opts for everything to be grilled or steamed. Like other followers of the diet, she relies heavily on vegetables and lean proteins to stay in shape.
Vinny Guadagnino swears the diet helped him drop 50 pounds.
"Jersey Shore" alum and current star Vinny Guadagnino is a huge fan of the low-carb diet, which he says has boosted his energy and helped him lose 50 pounds.
"I’ve discovered the fountain of youth," he wrote in an Instagram post. "You ready for it? ... Stop eating sugars and grains and instead 98% of the time eat real food like whole eggs, bacon, butter, fatty steaks, fatty fish and plants and exercise a few times a week. When I ate sugars and grains I was 50lbs heavier and looked 10 years older."
He even adopted the diet as part of his brand, starting an Instagram page called "ketoguido."
LeBron James lost weight on the keto diet.
Lebron James followed a modified version of the keto diet for 67 days and it helped him slim down quite a bit. The newly-minted Los Angeles Lakers player cut out sugar, dairy, and carbs. James centered his diet on eating fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as lean proteins like meat and fish. The keto-style diet helped the NBA superstar lose a "ton of weight" in 2014.
The keto diet can be a great way to get in shape, but should always be done under the supervision of a medical professional. It’s OK to draw on inspiration from the keto-practicing celebrities, but, before starting any diet, make sure to talk to your doctor or nutritionist to develop the right plan for you.
