Jake Gyllenhaal said he sliced his hand while filming a fight scene with Conor McGregor in the upcoming movie "Roadhouse."
Doug Liman's "Roadhouse," which arrives on Amazon Prime Video on March 21, is a modern reimagining of Rowdy Harrington's 1989 movie of the same name starring Patrick Swayze.
The original film made a modest $61 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo, but gained a cult following over the years due to the over-the-top action scenes, hence the reboot.
In the new movie, Gyllenhaal plays Dalton, a former UFC fighter who starts working as a bouncer at a bar in the Florida Keys. He ends up grappling with a criminal, Ben Brandt (Billy Magnussen) and his henchman, Knox (Conor McGregor).
The "Donnie Darko" star appeared on Monday's episode of "Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard" alongside McGregor, and recalled how he got a staph infection after cutting his hand during a fight scene where there was a lot of broken glass on set.
"We're fighting on the floor, fighting around tables, we're fighting around glass, even if it's breakaway glass," he said.
Gyllenhaal said he cut his hand while filming a scene where his character jumps over a bar as a truck crashes through a window.
"I get up, I'm supposed to have been a little bit out of it. I put my hand on the bar, fucking straight glass," he said.
Gyllenhaal carried on shooting despite cutting his hand on glass
They'd already reshot the scene several times before that take and because this one looked good he didn't want to ruin it by bringing up his injured hand, so he carried on filming, Gyllenhaal said.
"I was like, 'We're not doing it again.' I felt the glass going in my hand," he said. "I remember the feeling and went, 'That's a lot of glass,' and I just finished the fucking take."
"My whole arm swelled up. It ended up being staph," Gyllenhaal continued.
According to the CDC, staph infections can be deadly or cause sepsis if the germ gets into the bloodstream. Symptoms of a staph infection include swollen red skin, warmness, a fever, and pus inside the infected area.
Gyllenhaal said the cut and the staph infection were the only injuries he got while filming.
"I was really, really trying to take care of everything that we did and my body while we were doing it. I didn't sustain any major injuries."
In an interview with Business Insider last year, Gyllenhaal's personal trainer Jason Walsh said the actor was committed to staying in shape for "Roadhouse," and that it didn't take long to get him in shape because he's "the perfect specimen."
Walsh added the star used a vertical climber to help him achieve the physique of an MMA fighter because it was a full-body workout.
