Meryl Streep and her husband Don Gummer have separated after nearly 40 years of marriage.
A representative for Meryl Streep confirmed to Insider on Sunday that the 3-time Oscar Winner has been separated from her husband Don Gummer for more than six years.
Streep and Gummer met and wed in the same year, 1978. Their wedding was held six months after Streep's previous partner John Cazale died after a battle with lung cancer.
Streep moved into the sculptor's home in 1978 after their marriage and the couple had four children together: Henry Wolfe Gummer, Mary Willa "Mamie" Gummer, Grace Jane Gummer, and Louisa Jacobson Gummer.
Here's what to know about Streep and Gummer's four children.
Streep and Gummer's son, Henry Wolfe Gummer, was born a year after their wedding.
Henry Wolfe Gummer was born on November 13, 1979 in New York.
While all of Streep's children are in the entertainment industry, Henry is the only one to become a musician, using his middle name as part of his stage name rather than his surname.
Henry Wolfe also has the lowest profile of Streep and Gummer's children.
He told the New York Daily News in 2011 that he had initially considered acting while he was studying at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, but dropped out after two years to pursue music.
"I had to decide whether I wanted to try and make it as an actor or as a musician," he said. "For me, music was more stimulating from day to day. It was something that I didn't need to be working on a project to practice. I can do it whenever and I get satisfaction from completing songs that I never really got from acting."
Henry started out his music career in a retro-pop band he created with a college friend called Bravo Silva. After one album, he decided to go solo.
He's acted in a few movies and shorts, and has also written songs for four movies, "Terri," "A Good Old Fashioned Orgy," "Julie & Julia," and "Ricki and the Flash," the latter two both starred Streep.
Henry said his mother's success can be "overshadowing."
In his 2011 interview with the New York Daily News, Henry shared his feelings about being the son of such a successful and universally beloved actor.
"The fact that my mom is who she is can be overshadowing," he said. "Sometimes I worry that my story isn't good enough. Sure, my mom is part of the story and I don't get pissed when people ask me about her, but I wish I had something that could eclipse that as far as compelling storylines."
He added that people make assumptions that he doesn't "work hard" and don't take him seriously because of his status as the son of a celebrity.
Henry got married in 2019 and has 2 children, Quinn and Ida.
Henry married his girlfriend, Tamryn Storm, in 2019, according to an anniversary Instagram post his current wife shared a year later.
A year later, he had his first child with Storm, named Ida June. In another post he shared in 2022, Henry announced that Storm gave birth to a second child in their home on May 6, 2022, named Quinn William Gummer.
"I love you @tamrynstormacupuncture Your strength is mythic," the musician said in the second post. "I am so profoundly grateful and proud to be yours!"
Mary Willa "Mamie" Gummer is Streep and Gummer's eldest daughter.
Mary Gummer, who goes by Mamie, was born on August 3, 1983 in New York City. At 20 months old, Mamie acted in her first role, as Annie in "Heartburn."
However, according to People, she was credited as "Natalie Stern" to keep her identity a secret. Mamie followed in her mother's acting footsteps, appearing in her first film as an adult, "The Hoax," in 2006. She got her first role on Broadway a year later on the show "Mr. Marmalade."
Mamie has acted alongside her mother on three occasions: her first film "Heartburn," her third movie, "Evening," and the 2015 movie, "Ricki and the Flash."
Mamie told Entertainment Tonight that she was nervous about the latter role because she had to say mean things to her own mother in it.
"I think she was pleased actually. It was funny because I tear into her and when we called cut there was this big grin on her face," the 40-year-old actor said.
Mamie has also appeared in "The Good Wife," "True Detective" and "Manhattan."
Mamie was the first of Streep and Gummer's children to have her own child.
In July 2011, People reported that Mamie had gotten married to fellow actor Ben Walker at their family estate in Connecticut. The pair met while starring in "Dangerous Liaisons" on Broadway in 2008.
However, in March 2013, People reported that the pair had split.
In 2019, People reported that Mamie was engaged to producer called Mehar Sethi, and the pair had had their first child together.
At the time, this was Streep and Gummer's first grandchild.
Streep, who mostly kept her children's lives private, told Interview Magazine: "I've been working like mad for quite a while, so I'm getting ready for my first grandchild. My daughter's having a baby in February, so I'm going to go out and ruin her life. I specialize in unsolicited advice."
Grace Gummer has also followed her mother down the entertainment path – and even played a younger Streep in a film.
Streep and Gummer's third child, Grace Jane Gummer, was born on May 9, 1986 in New York City.
Grace also started out acting quite young, starring in the 1993 movie "The House of the Spirits" with her mother. In the film, she played a younger version of Streep's character Clara, but was credited as "Jane Grey" to hide her identity, according to People.
Grace went to her mother's alma mater, Vassar College. According to the college's website, despite having an interest in theater and joining the Woodshed Theater Ensemble, Grace majored in art history and Italian.
She spent a summer interning for costume designer Ann Roth, spent some time working at a costume house in Rome, and worked as a design intern for New York fashion designer Zac Posen.
After graduating, Grace made her theatrical debut on an off-Broadway show her friend was directing called "The Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents."
From there, she appeared in the Nickelodeon show "Gigantic," season four of "American Horror Story," and had recurring roles on "Mr. Robot" and "Extant."
Grace has also won a Theatre World Award for her debut role in the 2011 Broadway revival of "Arcadia" and starred in Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach's "Frances Ha."
Grace had her first child with Mark Ronson earlier this year.
Grace married a musician Tay Strathairn on July 10, 2019, People reported. They reportedly they separated a month later and Grace filed for divorce on March 23, 2020, according to court filings.
People reported that Grace cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for divorce.
In 2021, producer Mark Ronson confirmed rumors that he and Grace were engaged on his podcast "The Fader Uncovered." The pair married that year.
Ronson confirmed their wedding in an Instagram post to celebrate his 46th birthday.
"To my truest love...out of nowhere, you made 45 hands down the greatest year of my life. And i'm sure it took me 45 years to become the man worthy of your love. I hope I spend every one of these birthdays by your side til my last day. And beyond. Forever and ever yours," he wrote.
Grace gave birth to their first child in early 2023. Ronson's sister Annabelle Dexter-Jones confirmed to People in March that Grace and the Grammy-winning producer had a daughter.
"She's two and a half months now," Jones said. "She's stunning."
Streep and Gummer's youngest child is Louisa Jacobson Gummer.
Louisa Jacobson Gummer is Streep and Gummer's youngest child, born on June 12, 1991 in Los Angeles.
Due to another actor having the name Louisa Gummer, Louisa uses her middle name as her surname for her acting career, People reported.
Louisa also attended Vassar College, where she studied psychology. She then followed in her mother's footsteps once again, attending the Yale School of Drama for her master's degree. She also attended the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England.
In 2022, The Tatler reported that Louisa was dating another actor Jonathan Higginbotham.
Like her sisters, Louisa got her start on stage. But in recent years, she has appeared in the TV movie "Gone Hollywood" and had a recurring role in HBO's "The Gilded Age."
Louisa told The Tatler that coming from a famous family, she feels the pressure of people's opinions.
"I guess you could say I've put pressure on myself because of my siblings, but I think a lot of people put pressure on themselves to be good at what they do particularly when you are following such a prolific parent," she said.
The four children acted together for the first time at the 2023 Williamstown Theater Festival.
Earlier this year, all four children performed together for the first time in a play called "Three Sisters" for the 2023 Williamstown Theater Festival.
Sharing pictures from their performance on Instagram, Louisa wrote, "This past weekend my brother, two sisters and I acted together for the first time ever. @wtfestival hosted us, alongside a powerful cast, for a reading of Paul Schmidt's adaptation of Chekhov's classic, *Three Sisters*, directed by @kristjan.thor."
She added: "It was a truly profound experience…imperfect, beautiful, full of love, joy, anxiety and existential dread - a Chekhovian drama in and of itself 🫶🏻 wouldn't have wanted it any other way."
Streep has only occasionally spoken publicly about her children.
During an interview with Good Housekeeping in 2008, Streep explained why she keeps her family life private.
"Robert Redford taught me that when they were babies. 'They are not your props.' I really admired the way he protected his family. It's something I consciously emulated," she said.
However, Streep has occasionally opened up about her family.
In the same interview, she said she does a lot of lecturing to her four children.
"Lecturing is what I do with my children, not listening. Lecturing, and ordering out," she said.
In 1998, Streep told the Washington Post that mothering is a much more difficult job than acting.
"Acting — that's praise, money, fulfillment. Mothering — they don't even say, Thank you.' They don't even clear the table unless you say, Excuuuse me . . . '" Streep said. "Acting isn't like real life. Life is about not being sure: Is this the right school for this kid? All those uncertainties."
