- I ordered a stuffed-crust cheese and tomato pizza, barbecue wings, and dips from Papa Johns, Domino's, and Pizza Hut.
- The Pizza Hut pie was the heaviest of the bunch, weighing a third more than the Domino's one.
- Pizza Hut had the thickest base, while Papa John's was quite floppy.
The US has four major pizza chains – Domino's, Pizza Hut, Little Caesars, and Papa Johns. All of them apart from Little Caesars have hundreds of sites in the UK.
I decided I put them to the test, so I invited some friends round to play board games and compare pizzas.
I ordered a large cheese-and-tomato stuffed-crust pizza, a portion of barbecue chicken wings, and barbecue and garlic and herbs dips from Pizza Hut, Domino's, and Papa Johns.
I quickly noticed some differences in the pizzas. Domino's pie looked the smallest and much more tomatoey than the others.
This was the pizza from Pizza Hut. I ordered a large Margherita with stuffed crust, which the company says serves three. It cost £22.98 (about $29) and weighed 34 ounces — the heaviest of the bunch. Pizza Hut didn't list the size in inches.
It was cut into eight large slices, which seemed to be identical in size.
The Papa Johns pizza cost a little more at £24.48 (about $31), making it the most expensive of the three. I ordered a large cheese and tomato with stuffed crust, which the company says is 13.5 inches. It weighed 30.4 ounces.
It was cut into 10 pieces, which varied massively in size. This slice was about a quarter the size of the biggest slice.
And this was the 13.5-inch large cheese and tomato pizza with stuffed crust from Domino's, which cost £21.99 (just under $28). Domino's says its pizza serves three to four people.
It weighed about 25.6 ounces, making it the lightest of the bunch. The Pizza Hut pie weighed about a third more.
Domino's pizza was cut into 10 slices.
This is what the three pizzas looked like next to each other: Pizza Hut, Domino's, and Papa Johns.
The Pizza Hut pie definitely had the thickest base, which made the slices quite sturdy. My friend described it as "almost like a pretzel." The cheese and tomato were evenly distributed across the dough.
The Papa Johns pizza, in comparison, had the thinnest base and the slices were quite floppy, making it messy to eat. The cheese wasn't as evenly distributed across the pie and was quite clumpy instead, though this may have happened during delivery.
Domino's pizza was much more tomatoey than the other two.
The cheese in its stuffed crust was infused with garlic and herbs, unlike the others.

These are the stuffed crusts side-by-side. The Domino's one, in the middle, has a far smaller crust, yet it was more densely packed with cheese. The Pizza Hut pie, at the top of the pile, and the Papa Johns, at the bottom, had more air gaps.
In terms of flavor, the Papa Johns pizza was my favorite overall. It tasted delicious and was incredibly cheesy.
I also ordered barbecue wings from all three pizza chains.
The wings from Pizza Hut were all flats, which surprised me, because when I think of wings I usually expect at least some drums. I got a portion of seven chicken wings in a Texan barbecue sauce for £6.49 (about $8.20), which included one pot of dip from a choice of four.
I got a portion of six barbecue wings from Papa Johns, which cost £7.09 (about $8.95). My portion consisted of four drums and two flats, and looked very small overall.
From Domino's I got a £6.99 (about $8.80) portion of eight barbecue wings, which the menu described as "spicy." They had more flavor than the other two, but weren't particularly spicy. My portion mainly consisted of flats.
There was no clear winner for me – I didn't notice any major flavor differences between the three chains. The biggest difference, for me, was the makeup of drums versus flats.
I also tried the garlic and herb and barbecue dips from each chain. For both dips, Domino's was the clear winner. The Papa Johns garlic and herb dip tasted very sweet, and its barbecue sauce was too bitter.
Overall the prices didn't differ very much. In total, I spent £35.24 (about $44.50) at Papa Johns, £32.56 ($41) at Pizza Hut, and £31.95 at Domino's ($40), including delivery fees.
I ordered all the meals direct from their websites. They all had lots of deals listed online, and the sheer number of these was a bit overwhelming.
Domino's and Pizza Hut had options to automatically apply discounts at the checkout, but Domino's was the only one I got a discount at for its £21.99 ($28) pizza and chicken deal. In my case, this saved me £6.99 ($8.80) — the cost of the wings.
Overall, I enjoyed the Papa Johns pizza and the Domino's dips the most. There weren't any major differences between the wings for me. If I were to order again, I would opt for Papa Johns — though if I were serving a big group, I'd probably go for Pizza Hut to get more bang for my buck.
